Brotherhood: Homage to Claudius Ptolemy
Octavio Paz (1914 - 1998)
Octavio Paz was a powerful writer renowned for his modern poem and writings in Twentieth Century. He paid respect to the Great scholar Claudius Ptolemy, in his Spanish poem “HERMANDAD” which further translated into English by Eliot Weinberger few years later as the poem “BROTHERHOOD”. Ptolemy was the early person who conceives the doctrine of Existentialism that queries the Human presence and its significance in respect of celestial bodies. According to the poet, human life is very short. After death, we don’t know how long the darkness will continue. This is a pessimistic approach. But the poet never gives up his hope. He looks upward and observes the terrestrial living and non-living materials and their inter connection, systems and finally conclude that there is a big force which operates the whole universe properly. This Bigger force may be God who manages everything by law without any malfunction. Now, what is the role of the poet as a human being? Is he just spent a momentary time on this planet? Will he lose himself in the endless darkness forever? Or, He does some creative work that people will remember him after his life. In this way the optimist poet shows us how a mortal life becomes immortal.
